1. Indian Navy to commission a new airbase.

:-The Indian Navy is planning to commission a new airbase 100 miles north of Port Blair in
the strategically located Andaman and Nicobar islands. Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba will
commission the base, INS Kohassa on January 24. This will be India’s fourth air base and the
third naval air facility in the archipelago, which are more closer to Southeast Asia than to the
Indian mainland, overlooking key sea lanes of communication and strategic choke points.
The base will initially operate choppers and Dornier short-range surveillance aircraft. The
base can also act as an alternate runway to Port Blair for civilian traffic in case of
emergencies.




2. ASI declared 6 monuments of National Importance in 2018.

:-The 125-year-old Old High Court Building in Nagpur, Maharashtra;? Two Mughal-era
monuments in Agra - Haveli of Agha Khan and Hathi Khana; ? The ancient Neemrana Baori in
Rajasthan’s Alwar district;? The Group of Temples at Ranipur Jharail in Odisha’s Bolangir
district; ? The Vishnu Temple in Kotali, Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand are the six
monuments that have been listed. In 2016 and 2017, no new monument was included in the
list of sites of national importance. The last monument to be included in the list, in 2015,
was the Vishnu Temple in Nadavayal in Kerala’s Wayanad district.




3. Govt allocates Rs 10,900 crores for development of 40 satellite launch vehicles in
next 4-years: ISRO Chairman

:-Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced at a ceremony organized by St
Joseph’s College, Trichy, Tamilnadu which is celebrating its 175 anniversary that the Union
Government has allocated 10,900 crore rupees for the development of 40 satellite launch
vehicles in the next four years He also informed that the Chandrayan-2 Mission will be
launched within three months and It will land in one of those parts of the Moon which is still
unexplored. Human spaceflight Gaganyaan is planned to be launched by 2022, on the
occasion of 75th anniversary of Independence. He also stated that the next year ISRO will be
organizing the Centenary year celebrations of ISRO founder Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in which
ISRO will dedicate itself to become a world-class organization, capable of addressing the
varied socio-economic challenges of the nation.




4. Maharashtra to host 2nd edition of Khelo India Youth Games.

:-Maharashtra is all set to host the second edition of Khelo India Youth Games which will
officially begin tomorrow in Pune. More than 9000 players from different states willparticipate in 18 different games at Khelo India Youth Games. It has already been
announced that Youth Olympic Gold Medallist in shooting Manu Bhaker and Saurabh
Chaudhari, as well as weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga, will be among the cream of India’s
youth sporting talent competing at these games. Three 10-year-old athletes including
footballer Pratima Kumar from Jharkhand, hockey player Laltlanchhungi from Mizoram and
West Bengal’s 10m air rifle shooter Abhinav Shaw, will pick up their first experience of
competing in a large-scale multi-discipline event.




5. Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg arrives in Delhi for 3 day visit.

:-During the visit, Ms Erna Solberg hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She will
also call on President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. She delivers
the Inaugural address at the Raisina Dialogue and will address India-Norway Business
Summit. Several agreements will be signed after the talks including one on facilitating
dialogue to boost bilateral trade which currently stands at 1.2 billion dollars.

6. Vikram Misri takes charge as India’s new envoy to China.

:-A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Vikram Misri replaced Gautam Bambawale,
who had retired in November. Misri has previously served as the Indian envoy to Myanmar,
as well as in various capacities at the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs and
Prime Ministers Office. He has also served in various Indian Missions in Europe, Africa, Asia
and North America.




7. Russian President Putin invites PM Modi to Eastern Economic Forum as main
guest.

:-Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephonic
conversation during which they focused on key bilateral and international issues and
resolved to step up cooperation in dealing with terrorism. Russian president invited Modi to
take part in the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September 2019 as a main guest.
India is one of Russia’s main arms buyers. In November, New Delhi also finalized the deal on
four Russian guided-missile frigates.




8. Royal Enfield President Rudratej Singh steps down.

:-He will be succeeded by Lalit Malik, CFO, Eicher Motors Ltd who will take on the additional
interim responsibility of the Chief Commercial Officer of Royal Enfield (RE) with immediate
effect. Rudratej Singh had been with Royal Enfield for about four years. He worked for
Unilever in Singapore prior to his appointment as the President at Royal Enfield in January
2015.




9. Shenzhen becomes 2nd China city with 99 percent electric taxis

:-Shenzhen city in southern China has announced 99% of the taxis operating in the city are
now electric, becoming Chinas second and largest city to do so. Out of 21,689 taxis
operational in the city, around 7,500 taxis were still gasoline-powered in 2018. Notably, the
northern China city of Taiyuan has had only electric taxis since 2016. Shenzhen, which
borders Hong Kong, is home to Huawei Technologies and a host of other Chinese technology
companies.




10. Airports Authority of India declares 16 airports single use plastic free.

:-Sixteen airports - Indore, Bhopal, Ahmadabad, Bhubaneswar, Tirupati, Trichy, Vijayawada,
Dehradun, Chandigarh, Vadodara, Madurai, Raipur, Vizag, Pune, Kolkata and Varanasi - have
been declared as single-use plastic free. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also banned
single-use plastic across 129 of its airports, from January 1. Single-use plastic items are used

11. NASAs TESS found a new planet.

:-Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), NASA’s latest planet-hunting probe, has
discovered a new world outside our solar system, orbiting a dwarf star 53 light years away.
This is the third new planet confirmed by TESS since its launch in April 2018. The planet has
been named as HD 21749b. The planets orbit a bright, nearby dwarf star about 53 light years
away, in the constellation Reticulum, and appear to have the longest orbital period of the
three planets so far identified by TESS.




12. RBI provides USD 400 million to Sri Lanka central bank under swap deal.

:-Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has agreed to provide $400 million to the Central Bank of Sri
Lanka (CBSL) under the SAARC swap facility, to boost the island nation’s reserves. CBSL has
requested a further bilateral swap arrangement of $1 billion from RBI which is "under
consideration".

13. ISRO plans to set up Space Galleries.

:-Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO planned to set up Space Galleries in various
locations in the country. The Space Galleries are expected to disseminate the knowledge
about space science and technology amongst the citizens of the country.




14. Narendra Modi Donald Trump discuss Indo US ties over phone.

:-Narendra Modi, Donald Trump discussed prospects for increasing cooperation in
Afghanistan, the India-US strategic partnership, trade deficit, and security issues in a
telephonic conversation. Trump has been seeking a more active role for India in Afghanistan
which would go beyond reconstruction and include deployment of troops to fight the Taliban.




15. Bengaluru airport gets women only taxi service.

:-The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation and Bengaluru International Airport
launched a women-only taxi service called Go Pink Cabson a trial basis. The taxis are
equipped with safety features like an SOS switch and GPS tracking. The service will be
functional 24×7 and will be priced at Rs 21.50/km during the day (6am-11.59pm) and
Rs23.50/km at night (12am-6am).

16. PM Modi launched project connecting Ganga to Agra.

:-Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched a series of development projects worth Rs.
2900 Crores for the Agra city and the adjoining areas. The Prime Minister dedicated to the
nation, Gangajal project, which will provide Agra with better and more assured water
supply, at an estimated cost of Rs.2880 crores. Gangajal project aims to bring 140 cu secs
of Ganga water to Agra. This will help meet the drinking water demands in the city.




17. Gangavaram circle police received the Award for the Best Crime Detection for
2018.

:-The Gangavaram circle police of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, received the Award for
the Best Crime Detection (ABCD) for 2018 from the Chief Secretary Anil Chandra Punetha
and Director General of Police R.P. Thakur in Vijayawada. The award was conferred on the
circle personnel for solving the gold theft case that took place under the Bangarupalem
station limits on December 8 last. Within a week, special parties formed by Superintendent
of Police (SP) Vikrant Patil zeroed in on the Maharashtra gang and nabbed five accused,
besides recovering 4.3 kg of gold out of the 5.75 kg gold lifted by the gang from two
executives of a Mumbai gold dealer.




18. Japans passport ranked world’s most powerful.

:-According to the Henley Passport Index, Japan has retained its top spot as the worlds
most powerful passport this year, with its citizens able to enter 190 countries without
requiring a visa. Indias passport was ranked 79th, having visa-free access to 61
destinations. Singapore and South Korea come second with access to 189 countries each
while France and Germany share the third spot with access to 188 countries each.




19. Mary Kom becomes world’s top woman boxer.

:-Mary Kom, who had become the first ever woman boxer to win six world championship
titles in November last year, has been ranked number one by the International Boxing
Association (AIBA) in the light fly (45-48kg) category. The 35-year-old tops her weight
division with 1700 points. Ukraines 22-year-old boxer Hanna Okhota is ranked second,
with 1100 points.




20. PM Modi launched road sewerage projects in Maharashtra.

:-Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the four-laning of Solapur-Osmanabad section of
NH-211, underground sewerage system and three sewage treatment plants developed at
an investment of? 1,100 crore in Maharashtra. PM also laid the foundation stone for a?
1,811 crore housing project of 30,000 units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The
housing project will benefit the homeless poor like rag pickers, rickshaw pullers, and textile
and beedi workers.

21. India to become world’s third largest consumer market by 2030.

:-A report by World Economic Forum (WEF) said that India is set to become the worlds
third largest consumer market behind only USA and China by 2030. Consumer spending in
India is expected to grow from 1.5 trillion US dollar at present to six trillion US dollar by
2030. With the annual GDP growth rate of 7.5 percent, India is currently the worlds sixth
largest economy.




22. India’s growth rate to touch 7 percent in 2019.

:-The World Bank has said that India's economy will accelerate to 7.5% in 2019-20 as
consumption remains robust and investment growth continues in the country. It also
added that India will retain its position as the fastest growing major economy in the world.
World Banks report has also projected Indias 2020-21 and 2021-22 fiscal years growth
rate at 7.5%. In South Asia, Pakistans growth rate is forecast to fall drastically from last
fiscal years 5.8 percent to 3.7 percent this fiscal year.




23. Chinas new naval radar can monitor area the size of India.

:-China is developing advanced compact size radar for the Navy which can maintain
constant surveillance over an area of the size of India. The ship-based Over-the-Horizon
(OTH) radar system will increase (the Chinese) Navys information gathering capabilities in
critical areas including the South China Sea, Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.




24. BioAsia 2019 to begin from 25th February.

:-The 16th edition of the three-day life-sciences and healthcare forum BioAsia is to begin
from February 25, 2019. The event is being organized by the Federation of Asian Biotech
Association and the Government of Telangana. Hyderabad will be hosting the programme.
As part of the forum, ‘Startups Stage’ would set the tone for companies working on
solutions in pharma, bio-tech, life sciences, health-tech and med-tech sector to showcase
their products or services.




25. Centre introduced the Trade Unions Act, 1926 in LS.

:-Centre introduced a Bill in the Lok Sabha to amend the Trade Unions Act, 1926. The
Centre said that the Bill would grant recognition to trade unions, ensure representation of
workers in tripartite bodies and check arbitrary nomination by the government. The CPI
(M) members protested against introducing the Bill and walked out in protest.

26. ISRO aims to send human astronauts to space by the year of 2021.

:-The year 2021 will be a busy year for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as it has
set itself the target to send astronauts to space. The Gaganyaan project by the space agency
will make India the fourth nation to independently send humans into space announced ISRO
chief Dr. K Sivan. The Gaganyaan project was announced by PM Modi on Independence Day
last year and union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad last month had said that three Indian
astronauts will be sent to space for up to seven days by 2022 as part of the Gaganyaan.





27. India’s longest single lane steel cable bridge opened in Arunachal.

:India's longest 300-metre single lane steel cable suspension bridge was inaugurated by
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The bridge across the Siang River at
Yingkiong in Upper Siang district has been named Byorung Bridge. The bridge, built at a cost
of? 48.43-crore provided by the DONER (Department for Development of North Eastern
Region) Ministry, will reduce the distance from Yinkiong to Tuting by almost 40 km.





28. Jammu and Kashmir set up law commission.

:-The Jammu and Kashmir administration set up a law commission, with Justice (Retd) M K
Hanjura as its founding chairperson, to identify redundant and obsolete laws that can be
repealed and suggest measures for quick redress of public grievances. The term of the
Jammu and Kashmir State Law Commission will be for three years. The Law, Justice and
Parliamentary Affairs Secretary will be the ex-officio member of the commission.





29. Mohamed Salah Named African Footballer of the Year.

:Liverpool's Mohamed Salah named as the 2018 Confederation of African Football Player of
the Year. For the second consecutive year, he has won the award. Egypt forward Salah, 26,
beat Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane of Senegal and Arsenal and Gabon striker Pierre-
Emerick Aubameyang to the title. He received the award at a ceremony in Senegal.





30. SRiX signed an agreement with Cranfield University.

:-SR Innovation Exchange (SRiX), a Telangana-based technology business incubator signed a
collaborative agreement Cranfield University (U.K.). It aims at providing British and Indian
entrepreneurs access to new businesses and academic expertise. As per the agreement, a
10-week immersion programme is being developed with Indian start-ups mentored in the
U.K. by leading Cranfield academics. The partnership facilitates knowledge exchange between experts from Cranfield visiting SRiX to conduct learning sessions focused on
manufacturing excellence, whereas Cranfield would support SRiX in designing innovation
programmes for corporate clients in the manufacturing sector.

31. Namita Gokhale wins Sushila Devi Literature Award.

:-Namita Gokhale was awarded in the ‘Best Book of Fiction Written by a Woman Author’
category at the inaugural edition of Bhopal Literature and Art Festival (BLF). She has won
the Sushila Devi Literature Award for her novel “Things to Leave Behind”. The shortlist

32. Centre approved Rs.3, 340 crore to the Uttarakhand government.

:-The Centre gave its in-principle nod to the Uttarakhand government’s proposal which
sought fund for implementing an integrated co-operative development project in the State.
The Center has allotted Rs.3, 340 crore for the State. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat
said that the project will improve the agricultural economy and will help prevent migrations

33. US launches new innovation initiative at Raisina Dialogue, 2019.

:-Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) of United States Chamber of Commerce launched a
new innovation strategy at Raisina Dialogue, 2019 in New Delhi. The Initiative is titled as
“Fair Value for Innovation”. The Initiative will examine economic underpinnings in order to
enable breakthrough innovation and explore the opportunities to harness innovation capital
in India and around the globe through research, advocacy, partnerships and programs. India
is the first market where GIPC is launching this new innovation initiative. The theme of this
year’s Raisina Dialogue is “A World Reorder: New Geometries; Fluid Partnerships; Uncertain
Outcomes”. The inaugural address was delivered by Prime Minister of Norway H E Ms Erna
Solberg.




34. Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore launched National Youth Parliament Festival 2019
in New Delhi.

:-Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Col Rajyavardhan Rathore on January 12, 2019,
launched the National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 at a function in New Delhi. The
festival will continue till 24th of February 2019. The theme of the festival is- Be the Voice of
New India and Find solutions and contributes to policy. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
propose to take the Youth Festival to every nook and corner of the country and celebrate it
as the “National Youth Parliament Festival”.




35. Centre has signed an agreement with five States for the Renuka dam.

:-The Centre has signed an agreement with five States, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan,
Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh, to restart the construction of the Renuka multi-
purpose dam in the Upper Yamuna Basin. The project is a reservoir on the Giri River, a
tributary of Yamuna, in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. About the Renuka dam project: The
project envisages making a 148-meter-high dam for supplying water to Delhi and other
basins States. It will also generate 40 MW of power Funding: Around 90% of the cost of
irrigation/drinking water component of the project i.e. Rs.3, 892.83 crore will be provided
by the Central government and the remaining Rs.432.54 crore by the rest of the basin States
Water from the Renuka dam will be used by U.P., Haryana and National Capital Territory of
Delhi from Hathnikund barrage, by the NCT of Delhi from Wazirabad barrage and by U.P.,
Haryana, and Rajasthan from the Okhla barrage.
